Opportunity for Young People to Learn Woodturning

The East Herts Woodturners (EHWT) have started a Junior Section to give young people the opportunity to learn basic woodturning. The Junior Section meets on a different night to the main club, and is limited in numbers, so that as much time as possible can be spent on the lathe.
For many years the EHWT have been enabling young people to experience woodturning at Scout Jamborees and other events, with over 3500 young people already experiencing the craft. The Junior Section aims to continue these opportunities.

The Junior Section is open to girls and boys aged between 13 and 18. No woodturning experience is necessary, and the aim is for them to learn enough to continue, if they wish, with further training as part of the Youth Training Scheme organised by the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain (AWGB - the national association).

The Junior Section meets in Sawbridgeworth, 6 to 8pm on the fourth Tuesday of most months. Each evening there is a brief safety talk, and then the young people will work on a lathe under the supervision of an experienced turner. One of the Junior members is already experienced enough to demonstrate woodturning to the public at the recent Sawbridgeworth Spring Fayre (as shown in the attached photograph).

If you, or a young person you know, is interested in learning this craft please contact John on 01279 657901 or woodturningsurf@aol.com or woodturningsurf@uwclub.net. As places in the Junior Section are limited please contact John before turning up at a meeting. This will also help us ensure we have enough experienced turners available at each meeting.

Setting up the Junior Section is supported by the AWGB and partially financially supported by the Stansted Airport Community Trust (SACT) and The Worshipful Company of Turners, which is a London Livery Company.

EHWT is an active club which celebrated its 25th Birthday last year with a Party which was attended by the Mayor of Sawbridgeworth, the Chairman of the AWGB and the Master of the Worshipful Company of Turners. The club is a member of the Community Voluntary Association for Broxbourne and East Herts.
